For nearly three years, I secretly paid $2,400 every month for an apartment in Chicago because my mother insisted she needed it to build her consulting business. She promised it was temporary and begged me not to discuss the arrangement with Dad, claiming he disapproved of spending family money on her business. I believed her. I postponed graduate school, drove my aging car, and worked weekends until I had paid $81,600. What I didn’t know was that Mom had been telling Dad the exact opposite story: that she was financially supporting me because I couldn’t manage my own expenses. She even convinced my older sister Brooke that I’d missed out on a promotion and was secretly struggling to pay rent. My old car, constant overtime, and postponed education made the lie convincing. Mom told Brooke I was too embarrassed to accept help directly, so Brooke quietly sent her $400 every month to pass along to me. Neither of us knew what the other was paying. Then, at our annual family reunion, Mom smiled in front of everyone and asked, “Maren, how does it feel to be useless?” I finally looked her in the eye and replied, “Pretty good, especially since I stopped paying your rent.” The laughter vanished. Dad turned toward her, confused. “What rent? You told me you were helping Maren!” I opened my banking app and showed him thirty-four payments totaling $81,600. His face went pale. Then Brooke suddenly stood up, checked her own account, and whispered, “Wait a minute. Mom, I’ve sent you $5,200 because you said Maren couldn’t pay her bills. If she’s been paying YOUR rent, where did MY money go?” Mom reached for her phone, but Dad stopped her. “Diane, I want an answer.” And when my sister and I finally compared the messages Mom had sent each of us, we discovered just how carefully she’d arranged things to make sure we never talked to each other…
